Challenges Abroad

Challenges Abroad Australia is offering ADSA members the opportunity to join the India Dentistry Challenge and create real and lasting community change.

As a student on this program you will explore this amazing destination in all its contrasts and diversity. You will be working in Palampur, a rural town in Northern India. Palampur is away from the hustle and bustle of modern India. Much of the fast-paced development that people associate with India today has not yet reached the area and as such there is limited health care or dental services available.

This experience is designed for dental students to be able to work outside their comfort zone, utilising limited resources to treat patients in local conditions. Volunteers have a profound and long-term impact on the overall health of the community, by working with local schools and dental clinics to provide free dental care and oral hygiene education to Indian families that would otherwise have no access. Through our local partnerships, we are able to work with the most marginalised section of the community and ensure that those that need it most, receive the care they need. By focusing on family dental care, you will be able to treat both adults and children to change their dental habits improve their health for the rest of their lives.

You can expect to be working a range of informal settings, treating a large number of patients with a range of advanced dental problems. This is the perfect opportunity to apply your skills by performing cleans and fillings to make a difference. However, the Challenges Abroad difference lies in our volunteers developing not only professionally, but also personally, to become the globally aware dentists that this world needs.

Here's what a past volunteer had to say:

"I would encourage anyone who is fit and healthy, who yearns for adventure and is not deterred by crazy traffic and language barriers to consider volunteering in India. Before my departure the doomsayers had so many warnings ranging from the dreaded Delhi-belly to abductions and forced marriages. Personally I found that as long as vigilance and common sense prevail there really is little to fear. The bottom line is that this outreach offers an opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. Take on the challenge ... you know you want to!"
